Meeting Minutes - October 7th, 2007, Orchard Vali Golf & Country Club
Uppersteiners of New York State

The Fall meeting of the Uppersteiners was called to order by President Bill Hamer .

Old Business
Dick Milewski reminded members of the opportunity to have our chapter's logo printed on a shirt, hat, whatever. The item can be either provided to the company or Dick, who will take it to the company. The company will then sew the logo on the item for $9.00. Further information will be provided in the next newsletter. Bob Lindstrom advised via a letter that the publication expenses for the newsletter have been decreasing from originally $300 to now $100. Most of these savings are because many members get the newsletter via e-mail.

New Business
The Gambrinus Chapter is having a 35th Anniversary meeting on November 11, 2007 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The speaker is Dave Harr who is speaking on pewter. We are all invited and the form to register can be made available via e-mail. Contact Bill Hamer.

The cards available with the SCI Prosit are to be given out to people in hopes that they will join. There is a membership drive on and a contest is going to be on all next year to see who can get the most people to join SCI. The winner will receive their convention costs paid to Las Vegas (no airline, meals, etc.), just the convention. Part of this membership drive is a deal for the new member to receive the SCI Prosit for only $75.00 for three (3) years.

The 2008 convention is being held in Germany the end of July. Information was made available for members to read. Also, the post-convention tour from Aug 3-10 information can be received via e-mail by contacting Bill Hamer or the SCI website. All convention information will also be available in the December issue of Prosit.

It was suggested by John Hoffmann that our meal cost be upped by $.50 or $.75 cents to give the wait staff at the restaurant a better tip for all the work they do. Opposition centered around the facts that the staff changed frequently and a 15% gratuity was already added to our lunch bill. It was decided that there would be no increase, but we would pass the hat. The hat was passed and an additional $12.00 was collected and given to the wait staff.

On Tuesday, October 16th, Dick Milewski will be speaking at the Skaneateles, NY Antique Club about steins. All are welcome and admission is free.

SCI is looking for clubs to host the conventions for 2010, 2011 and 2012. It was suggested that because our club is quite small, that we could "go in with" or assist another nearby club. It was advised that most conventions are held around the 4th of July because when they started most SCI members were teachers and hence available then, as well as July is the slowest time for hotels and can then get good prices. The convention, however, does not necessarily have to be in July.

John Hoffmann wanted to know if our club should meet more than twice a year. It was agreed that neither summer nor winter were good times. Maybe we could combine our meeting with another club. John will contact the Thirsty Knights for information and Bill Hamer will contact the Keysteiners and Gambrinus clubs for input. More to follow later on this.

Our guest speaker was Judy Stuart , who gave an amazing presentation on steins made from unusual materials.

The door prize was won by the Joanna and Dick Milewski. Their lunch at our next meeting in May 2008 will be paid by the club.

The 50/50 was won by Greg Knauf.
